Translation of specification units between IP and ATM quality of service declarations

چکیده

An integral part of any network Quality of Service (QoS) system are its QoS declarations. QoS declarations consist of service classes, parameters, and specification units. QoS declarations are a component of the QoS architecture, as such they are a source of heterogeneity stemming from the fact that different QoS systems may be based on different QoS architectures and thus use different QoS declarations. A particular problem in that domain is the translation of specification units for QoS systems that are based on different forwarding technologies with respect to variable vs. fixed packet sizes, i.e., packet vs. cell switching. This is a problem that can be dealt with generically such that its solution can be applied to several situations of technically heterogeneous QoS systems like an RSVP/IntServor DiffServover an ATM-based system. While straightforward translations have been proposed, we investigate how more efficient translations can be achieved by using a slight but effective modification of existing AAL framing schemes as well as making use of statistical knowledge about packet size distributions.

Interoperation of Controlled-Load Service and Guaranteed Service with ATM

This document provides guidelines for mapping service classes, and traffic management features and parameters between Internet and ATM technologies. The service mappings are useful for providing effective interoperation and end-to-end Quality of Service for IP Integrated Services networks containing ATM subnetworks. The discussion and specifications given here support the IP integrated services...

Quality-of-Service Support for IP FLows over ATM

This paper describes an extension of a classical IP over ATM implementation which allows to support quality-of-service for IP flows. While standard classical IP over ATM implementations use shared VCs for several IP flows between two end systems, the classical IP over ATM implementation extensions allow to establish separate VCs with individual quality-of-service parameters for single IP flows....

INTERNET - DRAFT Marty Borden , Bay Networks ,

Service mappings are an important aspect of effective interoperation between Internet Integrated Services and ATM networks. Both Internet and ATM technologies have well-defined service architectures. In each, a small number of services are identified, with behavioral descriptions and related parameters to quantify network traffic and Quality of Service (QoS). This draft provides mappings betwee...

IP over Optics: Performance Modelling of Optical Shared Protection Rings

During the last decade, we have witnessed an enormous growth in Internet traffic. Different technologies have been developed since, in order to cope with the capacity and QoS demands this imposes. A clear example would be ATM, capable of achieving several Mbits/s and providing quality of service assurances. However, the deployment of ATM has been slow and some would say, will never be complete,...

IP QoS over ATM

This is a survey paper on IP QoS over ATM. It describes the need for QoS in the Internet and the mechanisms of QoS provisioning in IP. ATM is briefly described with a view to highlight its inherent support for QoS. Then, mechanisms of providing IP QoS over an ATM network are considered. Also issues that arise in implementing the various IP QoS over ATM is considered. See Also: Quality Of Servic...
